Is Suzhou Worth Visiting?

Yes, Suzhou is definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re staying in Shanghai.

Compared to the fast-paced and modern atmosphere of Shanghai, Suzhou feels much more peaceful and traditional. The city is known for its romantic canals, historic streets, and charming water towns.

Walking along the canals or exploring the historic neighborhoods feels like stepping into another side of China.

However, since it is such a popular destination for domestic tourists, Suzhou can get very crowded on weekends. If possible, try to visit on a weekday for a much more enjoyable experience.

Best Time to Visit Suzhou

Suzhou is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit.

  • Spring (March–May): Flowers bloom and the gardens look beautiful
  • Autumn (September–November): Cooler weather and clearer skies

Since Suzhou is the most popular day trip from Shanghai, it’s best to avoid weekends if possible. When we visited on a Saturday, the crowds were so intense that it made the experience more tiring.

If you want a more relaxing visit, try coming on a weekday instead.
