If you’re planning your first trip to China, there’s one question you’ll hear again and again: Shanghai or Beijing?
Both cities are among the most popular destinations in China and are often considered essential stops for first-time visitors. But if you only have time to visit one, which city should make it onto your itinerary?
Having visited both cities multiple times, we can confidently say that Shanghai and Beijing offer completely different experiences.
Shanghai 上海 showcases China’s modern side. Towering skyscrapers, futuristic architecture, luxury shopping malls, trendy cafes, and vibrant nightlife make it feel like a city straight out of the future.
Beijing 北京, meanwhile, is where China’s history comes alive. Ancient palaces, imperial gardens, centuries-old temples, and iconic landmarks provide a fascinating glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage.
So, which city is right for you? Here’s our comparison.
Why Visit Shanghai?
For travelers who love modern cities, Shanghai is hard to beat.
The city’s skyline is one of the most impressive in the world, particularly around The Bund and Lujiazui, where futuristic skyscrapers dominate the horizon. Everywhere you look, you’ll find a blend of innovation, style, and urban energy.
Shanghai is also one of China’s best shopping destinations. Whether you’re searching for luxury boutiques, trendy local brands, stylish cafes, or massive shopping complexes, you’ll have no shortage of options.
Another thing we love about Shanghai is how international it feels. Compared to many other Chinese cities, it’s incredibly easy to navigate as a foreign traveler, making it a comfortable introduction to China.
Some of our favorite places in Shanghai include:
- The Bund
- Lujiazui Skyline
- Nanjing Road
- Xintiandi
- Yuyuan Old Street
- Zhujiajiao Water Town
- Shanghai Disneyland
One of Shanghai’s biggest advantages is its location. The city serves as an excellent base for exploring nearby destinations such as Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Zhujiajiao, all of which can be reached easily via China’s efficient high-speed rail network.
Why Visit Beijing?
If history and culture are your main interests, Beijing is arguably the most rewarding city in China.
As the nation’s capital for centuries, Beijing is home to some of China’s most iconic landmarks and historical sites. Walking through the city often feels like stepping back in time.
The magnificent Forbidden City, the beautiful Temple of Heaven, and the sprawling Summer Palace all showcase the grandeur of China’s imperial past. And of course, no trip to Beijing would be complete without visiting the Great Wall of China, one of the world’s most famous landmarks.
Our favorite attractions in Beijing include:
- The Forbidden City
- Temple of Heaven
- Summer Palace
- The Great Wall of China
- Shichahai
- Sanlitun
- Universal Beijing Resort
Beyond its attractions, Beijing offers a deeper connection to traditional Chinese culture. We also found the local food scene particularly memorable, especially if you’re interested in trying authentic dishes such as the city’s famous Peking Duck.
Which City Is More Photogenic?
The answer largely depends on your travel style.
If you love modern skylines, futuristic architecture, neon lights, and urban photography, Shanghai is easily the winner. The city offers endless opportunities to capture dramatic cityscape shots, especially around The Bund and Lujiazui.
However, if your photography style leans toward traditional Chinese architecture, ancient palaces, temples, and historic neighborhoods, Beijing offers an entirely different kind of beauty.
Personally, we found Shanghai more photogenic simply because we are drawn to modern cityscapes and contemporary architecture.
Which City Is Better for First-Time Visitors?
The truth is, you can’t go wrong with either city. Both Shanghai and Beijing have excellent public transportation systems, world-class attractions, and plenty of experiences that make them worthwhile destinations.
That said, your choice depends on what you’re hoping to experience.
If you’re looking for the classic image of China—imperial history, ancient architecture, and iconic cultural landmarks—Beijing is probably the better option.
If you’re curious about China’s rapid development and want to experience one of the most modern cities in the world, Shanghai will likely leave a stronger impression.
Our Final Verdict
Choose Shanghai if you love:
- Modern architecture
- Shopping
- Cafes and nightlife
- Urban photography
- Easy day trips to nearby cities
Choose Beijing if you love:
- History and culture
- Ancient landmarks
- Traditional Chinese architecture
- Famous historical sites
- Visiting the Great Wall of China
Our Personal Winner: Shanghai 🏆
While we genuinely love both cities, Shanghai remains our favorite destination in China.
There’s something incredibly exciting about the city’s energy. Every visit feels different, whether we’re discovering a new cafe, exploring a new shopping district, or finding another incredible viewpoint overlooking the skyline.
Shanghai constantly reminds us how modern, efficient, and forward-thinking China has become.
That being said, Beijing is still a destination we believe every traveler should experience at least once. Its history, culture, and iconic landmarks make it one of the most important cities in the country.
But if we could only choose one? Shanghai would get our vote every single time.
