China is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes, ancient towns, and modern architectural marvels. From historic villages to dramatic mountains, there’s no shortage of unique destinations to explore. Here are 8 best places to visit in China that should definitely be on your travel list:

1. Fenghuang Ancient Town, Zhangjiajie
Located in western Hunan Province, Fenghuang (meaning “Phoenix”) is one of the most beautifully preserved historic towns in China. With its riverside wooden houses, stone-paved streets, and glowing lanterns at night, it feels like stepping back in time.
Easily accessible from Zhangjiajie City, this town is perfect for anyone interested in history, culture, and photography.

2. Wangxian Valley, Shangrao
When we first shared Wangxian Valley on Instagram, many people thought it was AI-generated—that’s how unreal this place looks!
Located in Shangrao City, this valley features dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, glass bridges, and even rafting experiences. Since it’s about a 2-hour cab ride from Shangrao Station, we recommend staying at least one night.
It’s a hidden gem worth the effort.

3. Yangshuo, Guilin
Known as the most romantic city in China, Yangshuo is famous for the Li River and its stunning limestone karsts. A bamboo boat ride through this river feels like sailing through a traditional Chinese painting.
The landscape here is unlike anywhere else, making it a favorite for couples, photographers, and nature lovers.

4. 1001 Trees, Shanghai
Designed by architect Thomas Heatherwick, 1001 Trees is one of Shanghai’s most unique buildings. While the inside is a shopping mall with luxury stores and art installations, the real charm is in its forest-like exterior with trees sprouting from every level.
We mainly came here just to admire its architecture from the outside—definitely worth a quick stop for urban explorers.

5. Hongya Cave (Hong Ya Dong), Chongqing
A multi-story riverside complex, Hongya Cave is one of Chongqing’s most iconic landmarks. By day, you can rent traditional Chinese clothing, try authentic Chongqing hotpot, and shop for souvenirs. By night, the entire building lights up, creating a magical scene straight out of a movie.

6. Wulong Karst, Chongqing
Still in Chongqing, the Wulong Karst National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most stunning natural landscapes in China. Expect towering limestone cliffs, natural stone bridges, and dramatic gorges.
Highlights include Longshuixia Gorge, waterfalls, and of course the iconic karst formations. Be prepared for lots of stairs and hiking—it’s a paradise for nature lovers, but not the faint of heart.

7. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Hunan
Nicknamed the “Avatar Mountains”, Zhangjiajie is one of the most famous attractions in China. Its towering sandstone pillars inspired the floating mountains in James Cameron’s Avatar.
Insider tip: The entrance ticket is valid for 4 days, which shows just how massive this park is. Take your time to explore the glass bridges, cable cars, and endless hiking trails.
