How to Get to Sun Moon Lake
*From Taipei
When traveling from Taipei, your journey to Sun Moon Lake begins at Taipei Bus Station. You’ll be riding the King Bus, and it’s easy to purchase your ticket from the King Bus booth on the 1st floor.
Board the bus on the 2nd floor, and the ticket will cost you 450NT or more. Expect the journey to take approximately 3.5 hours.
For those traveling in a group, an excellent alternative is to rent a private car, which offers super convenience. You can rent a car from here or book a private tour from here.
*From Taichung
If you’re traveling from Taichung, make your way to Taichung HSR Station B1 and look for the Nantou Bus Station. There, you can catch a public bus that will take you to Sun Moon Lake in about 1.5 hours. The cost of the ride is around 160NT or more, and you can conveniently pay with your EasyCard.
Another option is to rent a private car here or book a private tour here, which might be slightly more budget-friendly than from Taipei due to the shorter distance. This choice offers flexibility and comfort, making it a great way to explore Sun Moon Lake on your terms.

If you’re planning a day trip, your adventure begins as soon as you reach ShuiShe Port. Here, you can kickstart your journey by obtaining a ferry tour ticket from the ticket booth, allowing you to explore the three primary islands of Sun Moon Lake.
ShuiShe Port:
This area is a foodie’s paradise. You can also find the bus station here if you plan to head back to the city.
Syuanguang Port – A Mini Island:
Check out Xuanzhang Temple. Hike the 850-meter-long Qinglongshan Hiking Trail.
Yidashao:
Explore Yidashao Old Street, a lively hub of delicious food and souvenirs. All the water sports you can dream of are right here, including kayaking, SUP boarding, and electric boat rides.
Before you head out, grab a combo ticket to enjoy all the attractions Sun Moon Lake has to offer:
Bike around the scenic trails.Ā Enjoy watersports attractions at Yidashao Wharf: SUP, Kayaking, Electric Boat, etc.Ā Visit the Xiangshan Visitor Center.

When it’s time to leave Sun Moon Lake, follow these simple steps:
Return to ShuiShe Port.
Look for the Bus Ticket Booth to get a ride back to the city.
If you’re heading to Taichung or other central Taiwan cities, just use your EasyCard when you board the bus. No need to buy a ticket. It’s easy and saves you time!
