We spent two weeks in Chengdu, and we knew that one of the most popular day trip destinations from Chengdu is Dujiangyan. So in this blog, we’ll cover how to get there from Chengdu, where to go, and what to do beyond just visiting the famous “blue tears.”

How to Get to Dujiangyan from Chengdu

Dujiangyan is located around 59 km west of Chengdu city center, making it the perfect day trip destination. It takes about 1 hour by car or only 20–30 minutes by high-speed train.

What is Dujiangyan Famous For?

Dujiangyan is famous for being home to the viral bookstore in China and the “blue tears” river that glows at night. The site is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 2,000 years of history.

The glowing “blue tears” effect actually happens at the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, where blue lights illuminate the ancient water system at night, creating a magical atmosphere.

Top Things to Do in Dujiangyan

1. Visit Dujiangyan Bookstore

⭐️ Wow Factor: 6/10

This is the famous bookstore in China that you’ve probably seen on social media. It looks just as pretty as you can imagine, although it can get very crowded, which makes taking photos a bit challenging. If you’re not really into aesthetic bookstores or photography spots, you can skip this stop. It’s located inside a quiet mall, and the mall itself isn’t very lively.

2. Panda Statue at Yangtianwo Square

⭐️ Wow Factor: 3/10

This is more of a quick photo stop. Since pandas are an icon of Sichuan, the giant panda statue here is a popular attraction for visitors. Most people just take a few photos, so you’ll probably only spend about 10 minutes here.

3. Visit Guanxian Ancient Town

⭐️ Wow Factor: 8/10

About a 5–10 minute walk from Yangtianwo Square is Guanxian Ancient Town. It’s a charming ancient town filled with shops, cafés, street food stalls, and local restaurants. This is a great place to slow down, grab a snack, and enjoy a relaxed walk.

4. Blue Tears River (蓝眼泪)

⭐️ Wow Factor: 8/10

Right beside the ancient town is the famous “Blue Tears” river. The river stretches quite far, allowing you to walk along it and explore different photo spots. There are about three bridges crossing the river, and personally, I think the middle bridge — the one where the river splits into two — offers the best view.

The lights usually turn on around 6 PM, but it becomes much prettier once the sky is completely dark. There are also a few restaurants near the end of the river where you can explore local Dujiangyan dishes and enjoy dinner right beside the Blue Tears.

💡 Note: All four places mentioned above have no entrance fee, making this one of the most affordable day trip destinations from Chengdu.

Best Time to Visit Dujiangyan

Since this destination doesn’t really depend on seasonal colors, it’s nice to visit all year round.

Weekends can get quite busy, so if you have time, visiting on a weekday would be better. Also, try to avoid rainy days because most of the attractions are outdoors.
